Could you believe it…somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000 packed in a football stadium for a funeral?
I hardly knew the name…Charlie Kirk.
And not just the thousands packed in the Phoenix stadium; a TV viewership of tens of millions.
The first Billy Graham evangelistic campaign was held September 13–21, 1947, in the Civic Auditorium in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The public was shocked. 6000 people attended. Between 1947 and 2005, 417 Billy Graham Crusades were conducted in 185 countries.
The Billy Graham Crusades were revival meetings conducted between 1947 and 2005, during which Graham participated in 417 crusades in 185 countries.
Why have I thought of Billy Graham and his crusades in connection with the emotion that is still stirring? These both struck a chord even as there is ongoing conversation about the Kirk assassination. But more specific, Charlie’s funeral on television was that, a funeral, but it became far more than that. My daily newspaper noted, “Never in recent memory had Americans seen more top government officials speak so openly about Jesus Christ as they did at Charlie Kirk’s memorial, which Trump described as ‘an old-time revival’ rather than a funeral.”
Conversation will continue, and it will too often center on political issues. Guard against wedding Christianity and politics.
